Amazon Sidewalk combines multiple physical layer wireless network protocols into a single application layer, which they call the "sidewalk application layer."
Why should I join Amazon Sidewalk?
Amazon Sidewalk helps your devices connect and stay connected. For example, if your Echo device loses its wifi connection, Sidewalk can simplify the process of reconnecting to your router. For select Ring devices, you can continue to receive motion alerts from Ring security cameras, and customer support can still resolve issues even if your device loses wifi connection. Sidewalk can also extend the operating range of your Sidewalk devices, such as ring smart lights, pet locators, or smart locks, so they can stay connected and continue to work longer distances. Amazon doesn't charge any fees to join Sidewalk.
If I turn off Amazon Sidewalk, will my sidewalk bridge still work?
Yes. Even if you decide to shut down Amazon Sidewalk, all of your Sidewalk bridges will continue to have their original functionality. Closing it, however, means losing pedestrian connections and location-related benefits. You will also no longer contribute your internet bandwidth to support community expanded coverage benefits such as locating pets and valuables via sidewalk-enabled devices.
What if there aren’t many bridges near my home?
Amazon Sidewalk coverage may vary by location, depending on how many bridges a location participates in. The more customers participating in Sidewalk Bridge, the better the network will be.
How does Amazon Sidewalk protect customer information?
Protecting customer privacy and security is the foundation for us to build Amazon Sidewalk. Sidewalk has designed multiple layers of privacy and security protections to ensure the safety of data transmitted on Sidewalk and to keep customers safe and controllable. For example, the owner of Sidewalk Bridge will not receive any information about devices owned by others connected to Sidewalk.
What is a Sidewalk-enabled device?
A Sidewalk-enabled device is a device that connects to the Sidewalk Bridge to access Amazon Sidewalk. Sidewalk devices will support a range of experiences, from help locating pets or valuables, to smart security and lighting, to diagnostics for appliances and tools. We are working with device manufacturers to develop new low-bandwidth devices that can operate on or benefit from sidewalks and do not require the recurring costs of accessing sidewalks. Sidewalk enabling devices include sidewalk bridges as they can also benefit from connecting to other sidewalk bridges.

Amazon charges nothing to join Amazon Sidewalk network, which uses a fraction of the bandwidth of Sidewalk Bridge’s existing internet service. Internet provider's standard data rates may apply.
